March 4: Crescendo (Scouting for Music) This year's Crescendo event included two fourth-grade Girl Scout Troops and their troop leaders; members of Tau Beta Sigma and Kappa Kappa Psi, as well as members of the Marching Tar Heels and their friends; a piccolo, a flute, a clarinet, an alto sax, a trumpet, a mellophone, a baritone, a trombone, a ukulele, a flag, a set of pom-poms, batons; musical jeopardy, making maracas, learning to conduct, an instrument demonstration and body percussion; and an afternoon well spent, learning about music and having fun. Introductions and Instrument Demonstrations: As the Girl Scouts arrived, we gave each one a name tag and they sat in Person Recital Hall as we put together our instruments. We each introduced ourselves and described how our instruments worked and played for them. They were smart and already knew what a reed was and how to use it! They also had several questions for each instrument presentation and loved watching Leanne spin her flag. Musical Jeopardy: We split the room in half and brainstormed team names, the Pineapple Sushis vs. the Radioactive Pickles. The different categories in the game included musical vocabulary, famous tunes, instrument identification, musicians, and miscellaneous. We encouraged the Girl Scouts to talk among each other when trying to figure out the answer and then explain why they thought their answer was the right answer. It was fun watching them work together and teach them new musical terms like "allegro" and "sforzando." Making Maracas & Conducting: McKenna worked at the maracas station. She helped the girls fill Easter eggs with different sized beans and tape spoons around the sides to make the handle. She also taught the girls how the size of the beans determined the quality of sound produced. While the maraca-making was happening on one side of the room, Nora from KKPsi and one of next year's Drum Majors, taught the girls how to conduct 4/4 time and 3/4 time. Once they practiced together, Kenzie played Disney songs that they conducted to. After twenty minutes, we switched and repeated the activities again. Body Percussion: Maranda researched body percussion and Hannah taught it to the girls. This taught them how to read music (4 beats = 4 jumps, 2 beats = 2 claps, etc.) and we used movements to represent the music beats. Hannah wrote out two measures and everyone performed them together. She had several girls come up and write their own bars, which they then practiced together. Conclusion: All in all, the day was great! We concluded Crescendo with sitting on the floor and reflecting on what the girls learned. We had a question session and one girl asked us which instrument we recommended they choose to sign up to start on in middle school band. McKenna Gramzay shares her thoughts on Crescendo: "Crescendo had a great turn out this year! My personal favorite parts were helping the girls out with jeopardy and making shakers. In jeopardy, they got really into it and were surprised by some of the new music terms they learned. With the shaker station, it was exciting to see them make music out of instruments they made themselves. All in all, it was a fun way to spend an afternoon and the girls learned a lot." March 14 - March 26: #13DaysOfTBS If you follow us on social media, you know Iota Lambda is participating in National's "13 Days of TBS" and we currently just completed the tenth day. Each day there is a certain Essential Factor or Quality or activity we focus on and share our thoughts through pictures and captions. Through this social media campaign, IL has been able to connect with other TBS chapters and gain an even greater appreciation of all of our sisTAUs, Wava, and sisterhood. Be on the lookout tomorrow for updates on CODA, as we visit a retirement home to sing songs, the "oldies but goodies," with the residents. We are excited for another opportunity to share our joy of music with our community!
