From January 31st to February 3rd, members of the Marching Tar Heels visited Ephesus Elementary School with the hope of convincing the 5th graders to sign up for middle school band programs. Most, if not all, of the volunteers were members of the Greek Music organizations: SAI, PMA, TBS, and KKPsi. The following members of Tau Beta Sigma and Kappa Kappa Psi were in attendance: Mark Tierney (TBS), Logan Rowland (TBS), Megan Laney (TBS), Hannah Williams (TBS), Maranda Hansley (TBS), Hannah Macie (TBS), Jada Weathers (TBS), Sydney Lark (KKPsi), and Claire Paluszak (KKPsi). Two of our members reflected on their experiences.
"The kids were so excited to learn about our instruments. It was relieving to see kids so enthusiastic about music — it reminded me of you of myself when I was that age. I didn't have an opportunity meet college students like this when I was in school, and I didn't pursue music, which I ended up regretting later. I'd be satisfied if we sparked the interest of even a few students with this program." -Hannah Macie "Music has always been a part of my life and has given me many wonderful memories. I volunteered so I could spread my love of music with the fifth graders and show them that no matter what you play or whether you choose, band, orchestra or chorus, to be involved in music is to have a family. I enjoyed giving back to the community because I remember my middle school band coming to play for us in elementary school, and it was the coolest.
