TBS had a fun-filled week with lots of interesting visitors. First, on Friday, 4/8, we led Benson Middle School band members on a tour of our beautiful campus. They took their first sip from the old well, roamed around the museum (aka Wilson library), grabbed some free things from the pit, and ran laps around Kenan Memorial Stadium. The energy they possessed I never knew existed. They ended their trip by observing one of the Jazz Band’s practices which they really enjoyed. Hopefully, they now know all the opportunities there are to continue band in college. Our other visitors came for our Women in Music’s event on 4/11. Our first speaker was Anne Laney, a professional flutist and also the mother of our very own Megan Laney. She talked about the path she took to achieve her career goals. Mrs. Laney knew she wanted to work in music since 2nd grade and even though it was a difficult, long journey she never gave up on her dreams and now she has a rewarding career of principal flute in the North Carolina Symphony. Our second speaker was Robin Gorham, a band director from Fuquay Varina Middle School. She also graduated UNC almost 30 years ago. Gorham talked about how important she believes our organization is to the Marching Tar Heels. If TBS existed when she was at UNC, she says she would’ve definitely joined (Honorary Member or Nah?). We serve the band, but it also serves us. She talked about the important connections she has made in the real world just from being a former Marching Tar Heel or being in band at all. It’s a family that is there to support you, so we should hold on to that and appreciate it. BELIEVE IN THE POWER OF THE GEEB! It has been a great month of service, so far! I’m looking forward to our Girl Scout visitors in the upcoming week. MOTS Imani Burwell Fall ’15 scintILating DEUXlight |
