A Letter From Our Founding President...
"It all started with Jesse W. Watson Jr. Jesse and me. We were both members of the tenor sax section and he was always talking about wanting to start a chapter of KKPsi at UNC. Jesse had the vision and I had the “balls” (for lack of a better word). So after band practice I walked up to Mr.Fuchs with Jesse in tow and told him about his idea at which point Mr.Fuchs looked at me and asked if I’d planned to start a chapter of TBS. At this point neither I nor Jesse knew anything about TBS, so I said yes!
After much research, Jesse and I planned a meeting with Mr.Fuchs, Mr. McClure, and El for the following week. It was at this time that I convinced Mr. Fuchs to not only support but become the faculty advisor for the now Mu Eta Chapter and El to be the advisor for the now Iota Lambda chapter. Mr. Fuchs was never quiet about the fact that this has been tried and failed on many occasions but I convinced him that since my name is Christina Meares, we will not only have a chapter of KKPsi but also one for TBS.
So, over the course of many months, myself and Jesse advertised for this new student organization to not only serve the band but be a collective & organized voice for students in the band program. Me and Jesse made it a point that this was not to be the black organization of the marching band, which lost us a few fans. However, we were able to start with a strong number of 12 future for the formation of Iota Lambda and 9 for Mu Eta. It was incredibly hard and I had doubts myself but I fought to have our charter within the year and that’s what happened. Many of the other charter members were not aware of the negotiating and convincing I had to do with our advising chapter and regional advisor to get us chartered in a timely fashion. Eight of the ten charter members were all seniors which is why Iota Lambda was founded in Spring 2008 as oppose to Fall. I realized that being president and a leader was not about me but about truly being selfless and doing what is best for all of us--being our advocate and working extremely hard often without gratitude from the ones I was serving. I am extremely proud of the progress but let it be known it all came from the brain child of Jesse W. Watson; without his vision neither Iota Lambda nor Mu Eta would be here."
